Patrick Dempsey, a co-owner of the Vision Racing team, will drive the Chevrolet Corvette pace car for the Indianapolis 500 on May 27.
Dempsey, one of the stars of the ABC-TV hit drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” will lead the field of 33 drivers to the green flag at the start of the race.
“During recent years he has developed a strong bond with racing and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, so he truly understands and appreciates the pageantry, prestige and tradition of the month of May and the Indianapolis 500,” Speedway president Joie Chitwood said in a statement today.
Dempsey has driven in sports car races and off-road events and is a partner in Vision Racing with IRL and Speedway CEO Tony George.

People Magazine named Patrick Dempsey one of the most beautiful people of 2007.
“The gray hairs certainly have come in the last few months,” says the 41-year-old of the grey in his anatomy. “The last year has been difficult on many levels, with the show moving to Thursday night, and everything that happened this year, and worrying that everything was going to go all right with the boys [newborns Darby and Sullivan] and my wife [Jill, age 41]. But they’ve ceased to come in as quickly.”

Patrick Dempsey’s twin boys are only 10 weeks old, but they already have “distinct personalities,” the Grey’s Anatomy star says.
“Sullivan is very funny – he has funny expressions in the way he’s taking things in – and Darby is very reserved and quiet,” Dempsey, 41, told PEOPLE on Saturday, the day before the Grand Am Koni Challenge race in Homestead, Fla., where he was driving for the Hyper Sport team.
And how is his 5-year-old daughter Talula handling the new additions, who were born on Feb. 1?
“Talula is making the transition very well,” Dempsey said. “Last week we had father-daughter time – we went and saw Wicked. We’ll start doing more one-on-one trips.”
Dempsey, who has credited wife Jillian with encouraging him to pursue his dream of racing cars, said he is eager for his children to come to the racetrack with him.
“Talula already wants to drive,” he said. “She likes my silver Mercedes with the red interior. I’m glad because it’s a sedan so the whole family can ride with her when she learns to drive.”

Having become second-time parents to twin boys just two months ago Patrick Dempsey and his wife, makeup artist Jillian Fink, could be forgiven for slacking on the exercise front. Instead the Grey’s Anatomy actor and his other half went for an energetic cycle ride in Beverly Hills over the Easter weekend.
With their helmets on, and broad smiles on their faces, the sporty couple – who welcomed sons Darby Galen and Sullivan Patrick on February 1 – were clearly getting into their work-out and enjoying a little adult time together.
The couple’s new arrivals are younger brothers for three-year-old Tallulah Fyfe who, according to Patrick, knows the best way to her daddy’s heart. “One day my daughter said: ‘You’re very handsome, Poppy.’ That was the best compliment ever.”

Patrick Dempsey recently teamed up with Breakaway From Cancer, working as the group’s spokesperson. He didn’t just randomly choose a charity to support. Cancer has affected his family in the past, with his mother having been afflicted with ovarian cancer twice.
Patrick, who was living in Los Angeles at the times of his mother’s diagnosis and battle, dealt with many of the same challenges as other long-distance caregivers. From frequent phone calls to discuss treatment options to supporting family members such as his sister who lives near his mother, Patrick was actively involved in caring for his mother. One of his concerns was keeping his mother mentally and physically active during treatment. To help with this, he purchased a farm so his mother could stay active with gardening, renovating a new home and enjoying the outdoors.

Patrick Dempsey says that Isaiah Washington has changed, or at least he seems to have. The Grey’s Anatomy star has been observing Washington from a safe distance though since the infamously homophobic star grabbed Dempsey by the throat for defending Grey’s Anatomy costar T.R. Knight against a gay slur. The situation, now just a few months short of being a year old, called for stern action from Grey’s Anatomy producers, particularly after Washington made the mistake of repeating the slur at the Golden Globes, albeit in a regretting context.
Dempsey was approached by IMDB reporters recently to check in on how things are going since Washington spent his week in anger rehab. Dempsey’s response was tentatively reassuring at best.
“I haven’t spent enough time around him to honestly know what’s going on with him… (but) you do have a feeling, when you look at him, that something is different, and that he is working on things. You can’t get away from the fact he’s doing a great job on the show; he does beautiful work. He’s very passionate about it. He allows himself to feel deeply and sometimes that’s very difficult to contain and control appropriately.” Dempsey told IMDB.
